Not sure what to do now that Abe’s Amble is over and you have all this time on your hands. Why not accept the next challenge and sign up for the Triple Crown. What is the Triple Crown you ask? Well…

The Springfield Road Runner’s Club (SRRC) Triple Crown is back for its third year, and this motivating event has grown in popularity. In 2008, we had 13 runners, and in 2009, we had 27. The Triple Crown Challenge was created to motivate Abe’s Army participants to move to the next level in their running experience. Many people have taken on the challenge and found they enjoyed running longer distances and the continued camaraderie and personal success that goes with it. The SRRC hopes you will give it a try!

HISTORY: The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing consists of three races for three-year-old thoroughbred horses: The Kentucky Derby (2.01 km), Preakness Stakes (1.91 km), and Belmont Stakes (2.41 km). Winning all three of these thoroughbred horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment of a thoroughbred racehorse.

Based on this illustrious history, the SRRC has developed its own Triple Crown.

The rules are simple…

1) You must be an Abe’s Army participant. You can be a new or returning participant or leader.

2) You must have completed the 2010 Abe’s Amble (10K/6.2 miles).

3) You must complete the 2010 Shoreline Classic (15K/9.3 miles) and be running it for the first time.

4) You must complete the 2010 Frostbite Classic (10 miles) and be running it for the first time.

After completing all three races, each individual will receive a t-shirt, and a chance to win a drawing for additional prizes. Want to give it a try?

Between now and November 1, 2010, you need to let us know that you are completing or hoping to complete the above-mentioned races. The BEST way to do this is to JOIN our new facebook page: The SRRC Triple Crown Challenge.

For those of you who do not have a facebook page, please contact Linda Castor (2010 Director) by email at linda.castor@yahoo.com.

Linda will need the following information: Name, DOB (kept private and only seen by the TCC committee), telephone number, e-mail address, and t-shirt size.

In order to become a full-fledged, Triple Crown participant, you must complete the above-mentioned races AND submit your race times to Linda, either through facebook or email at: linda.castor@yahoo.com.

Springfield Power Walker is a new group that is making it’s debut this year with Abe’s Army. Springfield Power Walkers are NOT Race Walkers. They are a group, for whatever reasons, whose bodies/joints will no longer tolerate the “pounding” associated with running. Springfield Power Walkers can be a support group for runners with injuries who want to be out there doing something while they heal. This can also be a great place to start for individuals wanting to become runners during the year when Abe’s Army isn’t in session.

During April and about half of May, we will meet at the Washington Park pavilion at 5:30 pm. Then in May, we will switch to having track work-outs at the Sacred Heart-Griffin Track.

The purpose of the Wednesday night work-outs is to get faster. This doesn’t mean that you need to be a fast runner to come. Our group is made up of runners who run anywhere from a 5:00 mile to a 13:00 mile. Everyone just comes and runs the work-out at the pace that is right for him/her. It is really a fun, friendly group. Plus, it is so much easier to finish a tough work-out if you’re part of a group!!

Anyway, I’m looking forward to a great year!! Check the blog frequently for additional information.

What is Summer Wits you ask? Basically, it’s a spin-off from the HalfWits group, organized by Kimee Armour, Jessica Larson, and Linda Castor. It is for anyone who needs to train for a fall 2010 Marathon. We decided to follow Hal Higdon’s 18-week comprehensive Novice 2 Guide, tweaked with advice from our local top athletes and sprinkled with a wish-desire on our part to have at least a couple of 20 or 20+ mileage runs in before attempting our first Marathon in Chicago on 10-10-10. Our schedule accommodates leaders in Abe’s Army, so one of the rest days is Tuesday, instead of Monday.
