Spring is upon us and it’s time to start talking races. The 2009 Illinois State Fair Parade Run was a great event and we expect the 2010 event to be even bigger and better. Help us take this race over the top!

Registration is now open for the 2010 Illinois State Fair 2 Mile Parade Run being held on August 12, 2010 @ 5:30 PM by going to:

As a result of numerous suggestions, we have a “No Shirt” entry fee. The fee to participate in the Parade Run without receiving a shirt will be $10.00 until August 10, 2010 at 11:59 PM. The price increases to $12.00 if registering for this option at Packet Pick-up or on Race Day. There will not be any discounts given for this option.

We have carried forward the 2009 fees ($16.00) for those wanting a shirt until June 30, 2010 @ 11:59 PM. From July 1, 2010 till August 10, 2010 @ 11:59 PM, the fee will increase to $18.00. A $1.00 discount will be provided for those that are members of the SRRC.  At Packet Pick-up and on Race Day, the fee will increase to $20.00 with no discount.

All GMR (Get me Registered) fees are included in the registration fee.

Once again, Zorrel will be the provider of our race shirts with Chris Britt providing the art work. The race shirts will be the same style/fit as the shirts were for the 2009 event. Everyone will be guaranteed a race shirt that paid for one. We hope to have all the shirts/sizes available but some may need to be delivered after the race date.

Since this is a 2 mile event, walkers are encouraged to participate but there is not a separate category for walkers. Walkers will be eligible for age group awards.

Registration for this event is only available on-line. In the event that this option is not available to you, please contact either Lance Cull (ltcull@aol.com) or Kevin Milward (milwardcrew@sbcglobal.net) and we will make sure you get registered.

You should do this race, my dad, Kevin M. and Lance organize and direct this race. Last year as you all may know the t-shirts were amazing. Come out for the State Fair Parade run 2010 :)

  2. Tami says:

Well Kara, I’ve never met your dad but since I like your mom so much, I think I will sign up!!

  3. We look forward to having all the runners at the fair. For the latest happenings at the fair, you can visit our websites:

  4. Cris says:

Where will the registration area be? This is my first year for this run and was not sure where it started/where I needed register the day of the event.
    Thanks!

  5. Lance says:

Race day registration is from 4 PM to 5 PM on August 12 at the Ethnic Village gazebo. Ethinc village is located just inside the Main Gate adjacent to Adventure Village. The race starts on Main St. inside the fairgrounds and right outside of ethnic village. If you need any additional information, please e-mail me direct (Lance) at ltcull@aol.com. I am one of the race directors and will be happy to assist.

  6. jared says:

Can you tell me where the packet pick-up prior to race day will be? Thanks.

  7. lcull says:

Packet pick-up will be on Wednesday from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Springfield Running Center. Their address is 2943 W. White Oaks Dr. in Springfield.

  8. Danny says:

Will the event be canceled if there is high heat index? How will we know if it’s canceled?

  9. Danielle says:

Does the race end inside the main gate to the fairgrounds?

  10. Lance says:

I do not forsee the event being cancelled if I have anything to do with it. So far, the weather we have experience in the days past would not require the cancellation of the race. If the race gets cancelled, I will send out an e-mail to all registered and will post something on the SRRC website.

  11. Sheila says:

After the 10th where can one register. Can we register at the Running Center during packet pickup?

  12. Rob says:

I picked the non-shirt option, but now I’m regretting that. Is it too late to change my mind?

  13. Lance says:

Sheila… Registration will be available at The Springfield Running Center on August 11 from 4-7 PM. You can also register on August 12 (Race Day) from 4-5 at the Ethnic Village gazebo.

  14. Lance says:

Rob… As of this morning, we have 150 shirts available (all sizes available) to those who register for that option at packet pick-up and on race day. They will also be available to purchase for the low price of $10.00 at the registration table at packet pick-up and on race day.

One way or another, shirts will be guaranteed to all who want a shirt/sign up for the shirt option when registering. There may be a delay if we run out of a specific size and need to re-order, but you will receive a shirt.

  15. Danny says:

I picked up my packet. Where is the starting line and where do we park? I could not find that info.

    Thanks,
    Danny

  16. Mary Tuttle says:

Good Luck to everyone running. See you at the starting line!

  17. Lance says:

Danny… We will learn from this mistake and next year we will have maps and a short information sheet. The starting line is located by Ethnic Village on Main Street. The course is an out and back. Parking is free on the fairgrounds on Thursday. Some places I have heard where people park is at gate 11 or 7. You can also park outside the grounds but you will have to pay or find a side street.

If you have any other needs, please e-mail directly at ltcull@aol.com. I will monitor my e-mail until 11:00ish when I will head to get the race site ready.

  18. Joe Thiel says:

To Kevin, Lance and all the volunteers for the Parade Run: don’t let a little glitch with the timing get you down. You all are to be CONGRATULATED for a job well done!!! If anyone has any criticism about your race, they better have been a race director themselves, or they need to shut up. The whole race was great, from registration on. And from what I could tell, everyone after the race was having a great time. That’s what it’s all about. After all, this isn’t the Olympics!!!

So, I say–great job guys!!!! I know you’ll get this all straightened out. Thanks for stepping up to the plate and organizing such a great event.

  19. MIke says:

When and where will the results be posted?

  20. Gi Shaw says:

We each probably have the love / hate relationship with our technology. This glitch proves that runners can and should be athletes who possess sportsmanship, dignity and class. Social time was expanded during the interim too.

I did not hear grumbling but did overhear how good the shower was going to feel this evening.

Thanks for putting the race together: Kevin and Lance and many other staff!

  21. Jake Klug says:

Not to be a broken record but, Joe, I agree. I could see that it was bothering Lance a bit. In my opinion, Lance and everyone else should be commended. These races are not easy to put on. Even more so trying to do this with all the fair activities happening at the same time. There is no reason for anyone to hang their head. Glitches WILL happen and this won’t be the last time either, if any sort of technology is involved. It is just the nature of the beast.

Like Joe said, I applaud you all for your hard work and dedication to events like this. That allow me to come out and participate with almost no action on my part other than logging onto the computer to register. Thanks again everyone!

  22. Lance says:

Mike… As soon as the results are available, they will be posted on this website under the results tab at the top of the page. I will send out an e-mail blast once the results are posted.

    Thanks for your patience.

  23. BJ Vinyard says:

    Hey Jake,Joe,Lance, etc….

I will be a broken record. The race was great as always. I appreciate your dedication and hard work. Keep your head up and know you have the support of your fellow runners how understand what the sport is all about. Having fun, staying healthy, and friendly competition with those of your age group. :) Looking foward to next year !!!!!!!

Maybe it will be hot next year. I got a little chilly after the mile 1. LOL

  24. Kris Maurer says:

Hi Lance and Kevin… I didn’t run the race this year, but I heard it was a BLAST!! I use to thank the Race Directors, but after I directed a couple, I started kissing their feet!!! I don’t let any minor problems put a damper on it… After I directed one race, I actually went home and cried after a woman came up to me at County Market to complain about her shirt…2 WEEKS after the race;) I can laugh now.. YOU DID A GREAT JOB. ALL APRRECIATE YOU TIME AND HARD WORK!!

  25. Lance says:

Photos of the 2010 Parade Run are now available at http://hardybreed.com/blog/parade-run-2010/

  26. Pamela Enno says:

I loved the race! I didn’t hear anyone complain about not having the awards done. It gave us extra time to talk and try different beers from all the different countries. I think I tried 5 countries, need to go back and try the rest, hehehe.

  27. Marianne Jackson says:

Last night was so much fun-I came in dead last (race walker) and I was beat, tired and HOT! but seeing all those people when I came thru the Main gate was inspiring!
–and since I was last they were cheering–either happy for me–or glad the parade was coming–but either way it finished it off GREAT! I am not sure in that heat if I was nuts to do it or everyone should be impressed I made it–and it was a personal best walk of 32 minutes and the crowd was amazing–heat or not–everyone should do this RACE! as hard as this has been I love Abes Army–thanks to everyone who makes it happen–MJ

  28. Jacki Ralph says:

The State Fair race was very well done as always. Impressive amount of runners who turned out for the race in such sultry conditions. Excellent direction and clearly tons of hard work by all those involved. Kudos to the race directors and their volunteer staff. Your hard work and tremendous efforts are much apprectiated =o)

  29. Joe Thiel says:

Marianne–I’m IMPRESSED…and so proud of you!!!

  30. Emily Jones says:

Thank you so much for putting on a great race! Every year I try to talk myself out of it- either for the heat, the smell of corndogs while running, or my inability to sprint (I usually blame it on my slow-twitch muscles), but never regret going and am always so impressed. Even with the temperatures yesterday it was an awesome and fun run, and cannot wait until next year! Best yet…. milkshake stand 15 feet from the finish. Thanks for another great SRRC event, amazing tee-shirts, yummy post race food, and most important- a great time! See you next year!

  31. Lance says:

Thanks for everyone’s support, although I am not at all suprised. When you direct a race, it is the most exhilarating feeling when everything goes as planned on that one day after months of preparation. And as I learned last night, you feel like a toad when it doesn’t. But being a race director means you take the good with the bad, knowing you gave it everything you had, and learn from your mistakes.

Once again, I apologize and I hope that we will see everyone back next year so we can take this race to over 500.

  32. Mary Tuttle says:

Thanks to all the volunteers and support on such a hot day. Wow, I thought last year was hot! The only glitch that brought concern to me was the crowd control. (Loved the cheering – really) Is there any way that spectators could be informed that a race is underway, and not to step out in front of runners? An older woman tried to cross the road during the race and fell down. Fortunately she was not hurt bad and did not cause a bigger accident.
Thanks again for all the individuals involved to make this a fun run.
    MT

  33. Danny says:

Marianne — It’s fine to finish dead last. There are some words of wisdom I heard on the subject. “Dead-last finish is better than did not finish, which greatly trumps did not start.”

  34. Marianne Jackson says:

Thanks Danny–I agree (as I was dead last) Marianne

  35. Lance says:

Good news!!! Our scorer was able to retrieve most, if not all, of the finish line data. So far, the times are matching up with what people have told us. Before we publish the results, I would like to verify about 20-30 more entries. If you recall your time, can you either send me an e-mail with your name and time, or post something in this thread. My e-mail address is ltcull@aol.com.

Thanks in advance for your assistance and hopefully we will have some results posted by the middle of this week.

  36. Darcie Hannah says:

    Hi everyone!

This was my first state fair race – thanks to all the volunteers who ran the show! It was SO hot and miserable, everyone thought I was crazy for being out there :-)

Lance, if it helps my time should be right at 24 minutes. Thanks!

  37. Lance says:

    Thanks Darcie!
Glad you could make it out and hopefully this won’t be your last Parade Run.

  38. Jamie Driskill says:

    Lance-

My time was about 24:22+or -. I had the “slows” as Lincoln rferred to
one of his generals who did not like to get into a battle.

    Jamie D.

  39. Melissa Guy says:

I know mine was under 20min. Thanks

  44. Merrill Turner says:

  45. Olivia Turner says:

My time was 17:53 on my ipod. I know that’s not exact but it my time should be 17:53-18:00.

  46. Dick Boblitt says:

Lance, my Garmin time was 24:22, exactly what you posted. Good job and thanks. Good job Marianne, good to see you out there.

  47. Kevin Milward says:
