From cold to bold… join Summer Wits now!

What is Summer Wits you ask? Basically, it’s a spin-off from the HalfWits group, organized by Kimee Armour, Jessica Larson, and Linda Castor. It is for anyone who needs to train for a fall 2010 Marathon. We decided to follow Hal Higdon’s 18-week comprehensive Novice 2 Guide, tweaked with advice from our local top athletes and sprinkled with a wish-desire on our part to have at least a couple of 20 or 20+ mileage runs in before attempting our first Marathon in Chicago on 10-10-10. Our schedule accommodates leaders in Abe’s Army, so one of the rest days is Tuesday, instead of Monday.

For more information, check out the Summer Wits blog.

Another option is small group of us also training for a fall marathon using Jeff Galaway method meet 2-3 times for mid week training and a long run on the weekend.

  2. Nathan says:

Is there a Half-Marathon option? I am registered for Lewis & Clark on Oct 3 and would like to keep up w/ group training after Abe’s.

  3. Linda Castor says:

That’s great, Mary. Where and when do you usually meet? Our SummerWitters would like to know. Thanks! :)

And Nathan, I don’t know of any half-marathon trainings for your fall race, but you can certainly join up with one of the marathon groups as we taper off, or you could go half the distance and run back to the original starting point.

    Linda-
It seems as if our mid week runs are usually one of three places, Washington Park, Lincoln Park, or Lost Bridge trail always in the evening. The long runs are usually early Saturday morning and the routes vary. Saturday route alters to allow runners that are uncomfotable with the longer distances to join in and run with a buddy or group. The route is created with an easy pick up or drop off of the shorter distance runners. Terry and I are planning on meeting up with your group at Panera this weekend, but we are going a shorter distance this week is our fall back week. So if there is someone or a group of someones that want to meet up with the group and fall back with us – the more the merrier!

Nate- if you are interested in joining us for partial routes you are welcome. Some of the shorter distance folks either meet us some where mid route and we shuttle back to their vehicle or we create a short loop mid longer distance so that no one is left with out a buddy. Also, we are training with the Galloway method with the majority of us on a 3:1 minute ratio. Plenty of room for others to join in.

  6. Mary Tuttle says:

Linda – What time is you Saturday run?

  7. Michael Haynes says:

I’m one week ahead of you on training. I’m training on my own in Virden (25 mi south of Spfld) for the Lewis and Clark Marathon in St. Charles on October 3rd. I have run 2 Half Marathons so far. This will be my first Full Marathon.
If I get a chance, I may try to join you sometime for a mid-week run!

I have a question concerning the training. I plan on running Abe’s Amble. This is at the end of my 12th week of training (I’m one week ahead of you on Hal Higdon’s Novice 2), one day after a scheduled “back-down” 13 mile long run on Saturday the 21st. Should I skip the long run, shorten it, etc?

    Thanks in advance

    Michael,

I think it will be your choice and go with what your body says. If it was me, I would do your long run earlier in the week and change it up a bit, that way you are fresh for Sunday morning’s race.

    Michael,

By the way, I drive from Thayer so if you need to carpool or want a running partner closer to home sometime, let me know.

    Kimee,

Thanks for the advice. I might take you up on the carpool/running partner sometime.

Is there a group using the Hal Higdon Novice 1 training plan?
