Bob Goldman Memorial Scholastic Challenge 5K and Kids Fun Run

The Bob Goldman Memorial Scholastic Challenge 5K will once again take place in Center Park with
the start and finish staged at the Lake Springfield Beach House. The date of the race is Saturday, June
18th with the 5K (3.1 miles) getting under way at 7:30 a.m. followed by two Kids Fun Runs (both
FREE) at approximately 8:15 a.m. The course is accurate, mostly shaded, and monitored by both
volunteers and officers of the Springfield Police Department to assist with traffic control. The
“Challenge”, has a reputation of being a “PR” (Personal Record) course so runners of all abilities have
a great opportunity to set or improve their 5K best time. DUE TO THE REQUIRED (EVERY 10 YEARS) RECERTIFICATION OF THE COURSE — A FEW SMALL ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE THAT WILL IMPROVE THE ALREADY EXCELLENT COURSE LAYOUT.

Besides the course, participants enjoy the refreshments provided after the race and very generous
overall and age group awards. The popular dry-fit material t-shirts, that match the race logo used on
the awards, come with the paid race registration. NEW FOR 2016 — CHIP TIMING WILL BE UTILIZED WITH THE SIMPLE METHOD OF CHIPS ATTACHED TO THE BIB (RACE) NUMBER.

The real winners of the Scholastic Challenge are the local high school running programs. Each participant “votes” for a particular high school (could be where they attend, attended, where their children/grandchildren attend, etc.) and, after expenses are paid, all of the remaining funds are distributed to the high school running programs based on the votes tallied. To date, over $130,000 has been sent back to our local high school running programs!

This will be our third year that the Scholastic Challenge will be presenting team awards—a bit of pre-season “Braggin Rights”!!! The times of the top 3 finishers from each school will be added up and, low total time wins. There is no age restriction for the team award—the top 3 times, regardless of age, determine a school’s time. A team award will be given to the top 3 male and top 3 female teams. Defending Team Champions are Chatham-Glenwood (female) and Springfield (male).

NONE of this can happen without great sponsors and the Challenge has several: Bank & Trust
Company, Springfield Running Center, Spinner Plastics, Primo Designs, County Market, Floyd
Imports, Little Italy Pizza, Sullivan Chiropractic Center, Wheel Fast Bicycle Co., C.W.L.P., Springfield Road Runners Club, and Springfield Clinic Sports Medicine ensure that the maximum amount possible goes back to support distance running in our local high schools.

The Scholastic Challenge is the longest-running 5K (charitable or otherwise) on the Springfield Road
Runners Club Calendar. Serving as director of this event since its inception 24 years ago, Jay Rogers
will be glad to answer any questions, provide race applications, etc. He can be reached at either:
